Joel directs the development of IHG’s luxury, upscale, and mainstream brands for the Americas. Leading an international team of skilled development professionals, Joel is responsible for implementing the strategies that shape the region’s portfolio of managed and franchised hotels. As head of the Americas’ Transactions & Asset Management and Owner & Franchise Services teams, he oversees workouts and restructurings while cultivating valuable relationships with owners and franchisees who share IHG’s vision of expanding the distribution and preference of its brands.
Before joining IHG in 2011, Joel held various executive leadership positions during his nearly 30-year tenure with Marriott International including Chief Owner & Franchise Relations Officer; Chief Development Officer, Select-Service and Extended-Stay Brands; Executive Vice President, Global Asset Management; and Senior Vice President, Lodging Development, Asia/Pacific, based in Hong Kong. Prior to Marriott, he was with Laventhol & Horwath in Tampa, Florida for three years.
An advocate for professional development and fellowship within the hotel industry, Joel is active on various boards and committees including serving as a Board member of the AH&LA, Fellow of the Cornell Center for Real Estate Finance, and on the Executive Planning Committee for the New York University International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference.
Joel holds an A.B. in Economics from Stanford University and an M.P.S. from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration. When his schedule allows, Joel enjoys spending time with his family at their house on Kiawah Island during the holidays and special weekends. Joel also loves golf and plays whenever he has the chance.
